TRANSFER NEWS: Arsenal Secures Riccardo Calafiori as a Big Transfer Signing from Bologna
The Premier League club confirmed on Monday that Arsenal has finalized an official signing for Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna. He joins the gunners on a long-term deal, although details of the fee were not disclosed. Reports in the Italian and British media have revealed that the deal could be in the range of 40 million euros ($43.26 million) plus another five million in possible add-ons.
It was under Bologna coach Thiago Motta that Riccardo Calafiori really burst into the scene. The previous season, he had played a key role in their sensational campaign where they finished fifth in Serie A, earning Champions League football for the first time since 1964. Among other strong performances, he had made 30 Serie A appearances following his switch from AS Roma.
But that’s not all for the upcoming star: Riccardo Calafiori made his international debut in June and played three out of four games during the European Championship. Already these early efforts for the national team are enough to put him in the record books as the second-youngest Italian to play at the Euros, after legendary Paolo Maldini according to a post on X.
Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta was excited about the new signing, citing Calafiori’s potential influence on their team’s defense. He said, “We welcome Riccardo and his family to Arsenal. He is a great signing and gives us huge strength to reinforce our defense,”.
He went ahead to hail Calafiori’s character and unique attributes, which will be great value additions to the group in pushing them to challenge for top trophies. According to him, he said; “We’re looking forward to working with Riccardo, integrating him into the squad, and supporting him in the years to come,”.
Arsenal will open their Premier League campaign on 17 August against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The signing of Calafiori will greatly reinforce Arsenal’s backline while setting themselves on a strong quest this season.
